Cheyenne was kind of a relax week for us. We did get out and explore a little bit, though. We were there for the beginning of Labor Day weekend. That Friday, they kicked us out of work early so we took off and went into town.
We drove downtown and parked near the train museum because the brewery we wanted to have lunch at was in the same building. We had lunch and a beer and headed out to walk around town. One of the things kind of unique to Cheyenne is they have these little statues all over town. Our favorite was Mittens. 🙂 There were also some really cool murals.
After a bit, we saw some signs for the State Capitol Building. The capitol building in Des Moines was cool to tour so we decided to go see if we were allowed to tour it too. We walked to it because it wasn’t too far from the main part of town. We went inside and a lady met us at the door and told us we could tour the building on our own. Unlike the Des Moines capitol building, there were no security guards, no metal detectors, no nothing. We had walked around a little bit and another lady stopped us and asked us if we talked to the………Something. I can’t even remember what she said. I didn’t even really understand what she said, so I asked her to repeat the question. That didn’t help. We must have both looked really confused, so she said, “Did a lady meet you at the door when you came in?” So, whatever the hell she said must be a fancy word for someone who meets you at the door. LOL! We said yes, we did talk to a lady when we came in.
She asked if she told us the significance of the frosted glass on the doors? We said, she did not. So she proceeded to explain to us that we pretty much had free rein of the entire building. If the glass on the door is clear, you can walk right in and look around whether it’s an office or a conference room, or whatever. Even the Governor’s door has clear glass. She said if the glass is frosted, it’s considered private space and entry is not allowed. How cool is that!?
Here are some pics we took. Some of the floor tiles even have fossils in them.
After wandering around the capitol building we went back into the main part of town. We stopped at a little shop hoping they would have a magnet since we kind of collect them and stick them to our fridge. The lady minding the shop said she didn’t have any, but the souvenir shop at the train museum would have some. She said, “Go to the train museum and look for the entrance by the big boot. You can’t miss it.” She wasn’t kidding. Behold the big boot!
The lady was right. They did indeed have magnets. So we picked one out and headed home for the day.
One of the things I didn’t want to miss seeing while we were in Cheyenne was the Frontier Days rodeo grounds. So Saturday morning, we got up, made breakfast and headed over there. We didn’t really expect to be able to do anything except kinda of wander around the grounds a little and maybe the visitor center. But when we got there, we noticed a bunch of horse trailers all over and began to think something might be going on. We parked and walked over to the rodeo grounds and we had stumbled into one of the National Team Roping Tour events! Oh, man ok I’m here for this! We sat and watched that for several hours until we got hungry. Then we went back into the main part of town and had dinner and a beer at another brewery before heading home.
Back at the campground, I saw this. It has nothing to do with anything, it just cracked me up. LOL
If you’ve made it this far, I hope you enjoyed the read!
